Home / Blog / Venus and Jupiter Will Shine Bright at Skye & Stars

On Saturday, May 19, the entire community is invited to Skye Canyon for a special kind of light show– an evening of stargazing with the Las Vegas Astronomical Society (LVAS). Our third annual Skye & Stars event takes place at Skye Canyon Park from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Over 1,000 people from around the Valley will gather to picnic, socialize, enjoy a cool mountain breeze and uncover the mysteries of the night sky.

Guests can bring blankets, chairs, and a picnic basket and cooler of their favorite food and beverages. Food trucks will also be onsite offering a variety of treats. For kids (or adults) interested in an indoor star show, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back will be showing at Skye Center. Stop by the Skye Canyon booth and enter to win one of ten Skye Canyon prize packs and the $250 gift card grand prize.

LVAS will provide ten telescopes, which means plenty of opportunities to view Venus with a crescent moon and Jupiter with its four Galilean moons. There will also be two Mallincam video cameras and monitors that can display real-time color photos of the solar system that allow individuals to view the elements in the galaxy at close range. LVAS volunteers are passionate about the solar system and have helped our guests discover the Milky Way’s special treats like iridium flares and shooting stars.

This is a family-friendly event that’s open to the public and is free to attend.

LVAS is a local nonprofit made up of amateur astronomers and was formed to promote astronomy, educate the public, and provide educational outreach to students. For more information, please visit www.LVAstronomy.com.
