Home / Press Releases / Skye Canyon Donation to More Space! Keep it Safe, Nevada Initiative on Giving Tuesday to Create Safer Roads for Pedestrians and Cyclists

Skye Canyon, the 1,700-acre master-planned community in Northwest Las Vegas, kicks off the season of giving with a $15,000 donation that includes the use of highly visible billboard to Southern Nevada Bicycle Coalition (SNVBC) to support the non-profit organization’s More Space! Keep it Safe, Nevada public awareness campaign that has a goal of zero collisions between motorists and alternate road users like pedestrians and cyclists. The check presentation takes place on Giving Tuesday, November 28, 2017, at 11 a.m. at Skye Center (10111 W. Skye Canyon Drive).

Olympia Companies is the developer of Skye Canyon, and the Giving Tuesday donation includes the use of an Olympia billboard on the I-15 Interstate South located a half a mile north of the St. Rose Pkwy. exit. The More Space! message is expected to reach 2,000,000 motorists in a one-month period. The donation makes Skye Canyon a gold-level sponsor of the More Space! initiative and funds will be used to educate drivers of Nevada’s 3-Feet Passing law as well as programs teaching cyclists and pedestrians about safety.

The check presentation will be part of an education event for Skye Canyon residents and Olympia staff. Keely Brooks, president of the SNVBC will accept Skye Canyon’s donation presented by Chris Armstrong, vice president of development of Olympia Companies and Marketing Manager Desiree Van Leer. A representative from Nevada Department of Transportation, Three Feet for Pete, and Starved Raccoon will also be present; these organizations provided seed-grants to kick-start the More Space! initiative.

“Skye Canyon believes that pedestrians and cyclists should be able to use the roads without worry, which is why our community has bike lanes on all major roads and walking trails throughout our community. What the Coalition is trying to achieve is creating a safe environment for alternate road users throughout our city,” explains Van Leer. “We believe that raising awareness among motorists of the 3-Feet law and educating pedestrians and cyclists on safety is the best way to get to zero collisions on our roads.”

Skye Canyon is a next-generation master-planned community that since its 2016 opening has offered its residents a host of opportunities to give back to the Las Vegas community through its Skye Serves program.

“We want to thank Skye Canyon for their generous gift that is critical in achieving the More Space! Initiative’s goal of zero collision’s on Nevada roads,” said Keely Brooks, President of the Southern Nevada Bicycle Coalition. “Skye Canyon’s support will help us to raise awareness of Nevada’s 3-Feet Passing law and decrease the number of cyclist and pedestrian deaths and injuries that happen on our roads.”

Nevada’s 3-Feet Passing law (NRS 484B.270) went into effect on October 1, 2011. According to Nevada’s Division of Motor Vehicles, motorists passing a bicycle must move into an adjacent lane to the left, if possible. If not, the motorist must pass with at least three feet of space between the vehicle and the bicycle. Motorists may be charged with reckless driving if they are at-fault in any collision with a bicyclist or a pedestrian. Penalties include a driver license suspension. (NRS 484B.280) Nevada is one of 27 states to enforce a 3-Feet law. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, 27.1% of overall traffic fatalities in Nevada are pedestrian and bicycles. Nationally, in 2015 cyclist deaths increased by 12.2 percent to reach the highest level since 1995, according to the National Highway Safety Administration.

Giving Tuesday launched in 2012 as a national social movement to acknowledge charities and to remind individuals and companies to give back to their communities. It is celebrated annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and is the official start of the season of giving.
