Today more than 1,500 people attended Skye Canyon’s inaugural Chalk + Cheers juried chalk art competition and art expo at Skye Canyon Park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The contest’s theme, “Base Camp for the Great Outdoors,” attracted 38 artists who created work in four categories: Nevada landscapes, outdoor lifestyle, outdoor sports, or abstract outdoor. Artists in three groups took home cash prizes: $250 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third place. The People’s Choice Award winner received $500. (See award recipient list below.)
The event also included a vendor art fair featuring 30 local artists in a variety of mediums, Cheers for Charity benefitting New Vista, a local nonprofit that provides the intellectually challenged of all ages with equal opportunities and support so they may experience life to the fullest, a freestyle chalk art area, children’s art workshops, and food trucks. Local artist Norah S. Siller gave a live art performance; spending seven hours creating a painting on a 60” x 60” canvas.
